New Yorker Cover Illustrations
Process
Research
Articles and Mastclasses on the thinking behind the beauty and depth behind the covers were required to understand style, themes, and concepts. An audit was required to fully categorize the 47 magazines themes in 2024. The themes concluded Topical, Seasonal, Artistic, NY specific, Political. I chose to illustrate two seasonal and two topical.
Sketches
I create many sketches to test style and compositions before decided the styles and themes for each cover illustration.
Fashion Illustration
Testing ideas in pose and composition deciding whether to showcase the clothing or the figure in the clothing. A minimalist color palette and style to show case the for and outfit with figure ground play through the clothing was decided.
Seasonal Illustration
The two seasonal playing with the concept of beauty in nature and hidden faces among the seasonal vegetation. The left spring cover plays with a hidden face in the center among all the vines and flowers blooming during spring. The right autumn focuses on a figure in the autumn leaves changing colors with a figure holding a lady bug.
Topical Illustration
Testing ideas in pose and composition deciding whether to showcase the clothing or the figure in the clothing. A minimalist color palette and style to show case the for and outfit with figure ground play through the clothing was decided.
