Process

Research

Articles and Masterclasses on the thinking behind the beauty and depth behind the covers were required to understand style, themes, and concepts. An audit was required to fully categorize the 47 magazines themes in 2024. The themes concluded Topical, Seasonal, Artistic, NY specific, Political. I chose to illustrate two seasonal and two topical.

Sketches

I created many sketches are made to test style and compositions before deciding the styles and themes for each cover illustration. Physical and Digital sketches are used because the New Yorker uses both.

Fashion Illustration

Testing ideas in pose and composition deciding whether to showcase the clothing or the figure in the clothing. I wanted a minimalist color palette and style to show case the form and outfit with figure ground through the clothing was decided.

Seasonal Illustration

The two seasonal covers play with the concept of beauty in nature and hidden faces among the seasonal vegetation. The left spring cover plays with a hidden face in the center among all the vines and flowers blooming during spring. The right autumn focuses on a figure in the autumn leaves changing colors with a figure holding a lady bug.

Topical Illustration

This piece comments on the flood to A.I and how many people are and will be entering the Open A.I. software to explore and used for businesses. I used a large group of people crowding to enter the A.I. app on a phone and they are lit up by a red glow once they touch it to show a change in work process and standards.
